Lā Kūʻokoʻa has been celebrated in the Hawaiian Kingdom since 1843 commemorating Hawaiʻiʻs sovereignty and independence. The Hawaiian Kingdom was recognized as an independent nation by the United States, Britain, and France that following year celebrating the work of Hawaiʻiʻs Timoteo Haʻalilio and associate William Richards.
