Event Details

Franco Salmoiraghi will offer a slide presentation and talk story on how his photography has been shaped by experience. An incident he photographed at age 14, a railway tank car explosion in Southern Illinois, started him on his photographic journey that culminated in his documentation of the Hawaiian Cultural Renaissance and life in the islands over many decades.

Franco Salmoiraghi graduated from Southern Illinois University in 1965, and has an MFA from Ohio University. He came to Hawaii in 1968 to teach photography in the Art Department of the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He has an extensive archive of photographs, made in Hawaii, as well as other places he has lived or traveled. Many of the photographs from Hawaii were made during the Hawaiian cultural renaissance, a rich period of growth and resurgence of the Hawaiian culture; a significant divergence
