The Pueo Literary and Art Journal (formerly Rain Bird) is an intramural publication of Windward Community College. Any faculty, staff, or student of WCC may enter his or her work for publication. Additionally, writers who have attended at least three WCC Writing Retreats in the prior year are eligible to enter their work. No work from outside the college will be considered for publication.
The Pueo is especially committed to celebrating, encouraging, inspiring, and publishing student creativity. The Pueo is funded by student fees, and is thus considered their publication. Furthermore, students who enroll in English 280 Book Production enjoy all editorial, design, layout, and production responsibilities. As such, this publication reflects the tastes and abilities of college freshman and sophomores, and it is not corrected by faculty prior to publication.
The Pueo does not restrict or censor content, and any content you might find in a college literature class, or in the literature section of your local bookstore, might also be found in the Pueo. The students who participate in the selection process are encouraged to look for art and writing that moves the heart and mind, for wholeness, focus, authenticity, imagination, and control. Given the intramural nature of the Pueo, this presents a constant challenge to create a journal of the highest possible quality. Numerous awards from the American Scholastic Press Association affirm that Pueo is doing just that.
Additionally, the Pueo staff collaborates with the WCC Student Film Club to create film adaptations of selected writings from each issue. These films, as well as other productions created by the WCC Student Film Club, can be viewed at the club’s YouTube page.
Copies of the current issue are available free of charge in the library, the book store, and outside the Pueo Publication Room, located in Hale ‘Akoakoa, Room 236. You may contact the journal at PueoJournal@gmail.com or Faculty Advisor Robert Barclay at rbarclay@hawaii.edu.
