Student Research: Idea Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) Mentor

In cooperation with the Honolulu Field Station (HFS) of the National Wildlife Health Center, WCC students have had the opportunity to work in an Internationally recognized disease investigations lab.

Since 1988, I have cooperated with Dr. Work at HFS, investigating a wide range of events triggering morbidity and mortality in deer, birds, marine mammals and turtles, bats, fish and sea urchins.

Our undergraduate students have all been supported by the INBRE program and have presented their research findings at the UH Medical School in poster sessions. They learned fundamental lab skills used in disease investigations, hypothesis formation, data collection and analysis procedures and how to communicate their findings.

Shown below are WCC students who have completed INBRE Internships with us.

Cecelia Rosario (2014): Staging of sexual maturation in female Lufjanus kasmira.

Kanamu Kanekoa (2014 and 2015): Isolation of IgY antibodies from green turtle (Chelonia mydas) follicles.

Uliana Kosterova (2015 and 2016): Isolation of IgY from turtle yolk and evaluation of maternal immunity to fibropapilloma-associated herpes virus.
