Event Details

Please join us for the first Spring 2024 presentation of “Short Reads: The Hawaiian Journal of History Author Series”. The Hawaiian Historical Society, in partnership with Windward Community College Library, is hosting an in-person event series featuring presentations of historians of Hawaiʻi’s history.

Our February presentation is by Nanette Napoleon on, “Hawaiʻi Sons of the Civil War.”

When the American Civil War broke out in 1861 a call to arms was issued by President Abraham Lincoln. When the news reached the Hawaiian Kingdom many residents heeded the call and went off to fight in a war that was not their own, in a place that was far away from their home.

Nanette Napoleon is the state’s leading expert on Historic Cemeteries. She is also a long time trustee of O’ahu Cemetery and is the author of the book, Oʻahu Cemetery Burial Ground and Historic Site. In 2020, Nanette was awarded the Preservation Honor Award for Individual Achievement by the Historic Hawai’i Foundation. Nanette has also contributed historical material on various other historic topics.
