Mark Paikuli-Stride of ‘Āina Aloha o Nā Lima Hana Farm works on ‘āina in both Maunawili & Luluku, areas adorned with agricultural terraces, and flourishing lo‘i ecosystems whose waters were considered sacred and at one time used in traditional ceremonies and religious rites. The area in Luluku was considered a vital water source for Kāne‘ohe. The region underwent changes during the construction of the H-3 freeway and Mark and his family were forced to leave the area. He has since returned to Luluku, actively participating in a collective effort involving Native Hawaiian community organizations and various agencies. Their shared goal is the restoration and preservation of the ‘āina for future generations, aspiring to reintroduce agriculture and impart cultural traditions to schools and community groups.
