Educational Talent Search (ETS)


Program Information

Educational Talent Search (ETS) serves young people in grades six through twelve in career and college planning. The goal of ETS is to increase the number of youth who complete high school to enroll in and complete college. ETS students participate in grade-specific activities held at their school, in the community, and at college campuses. Services & activities include:

  • Assistance in preparing for college entrance exams, such as SAT and ACT
  • Connections to financial literacy programs and financial planning for college
  • Advice and assistance in choosing classes in high school and in college
  • Assistance in completing the FAFSA
  • Connections to tutoring programs
  • College campus field trips
  • Career exploration & counseling
  • Family workshops on college and career planning
  • Completing college admissions applications
  • Information on scholarships and college financial aid
  • Assistance in enrolling in college
  • Connections to support programs while in college
  • Mentoring opportunities
  • Exposure to academic programs and cultural enrichment

There is no cost to the student or family to participate in the ETS program. The ETS project is 100% funded by the U.S. Department of Education at $230,000 annually.


Eligibility Requirements

  • Students in grades 6-12. Preference will be given to students whose family income does not exceed guidelines established by the federal government and/or whose natural or adoptive parent(s) have not earned a four-year college/university degree.
  • Students must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen.
  • Students attending a Hawai‘i public school participating with ETS:

      Waimānalo Intermediate & Elementary
    • Honolulu Project
      Dole Middle School
      Ke Kula Kaiapuni ʻo Ānuenue

      Mckinley High School


The Federal TRiO Programs are educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and support students nationwide.  At WCC, TRiO includes three outreach and support programs- Educational Talent Search, Upward Bound, and Student Support Services.

Over the years, the TRiO programs have been expanded and improved to provide a wider range of services and to reach more students who need assistance.  Please refer to the TRiO website for information regarding specific programs.
