Marine water quality is ranked poor at this site and was rated #6 of 7 sites surveyed. Water samples consistently revealed enterococci values in excess of both State of Hawaii and Federal EPA standards. The geomean was more than twice the EPA standard. These waters should be routinely monitored, particularly following periods of heavy rainfall.

Oneawa Beach offshore marine waters are designated as a Class A Zone. Oneawa is connected to Kailua Beach at the eastern side. The shoreline is sandy, and the water is mainly utilized for swimming, surfing and small craft boating. It is however less than 500 meters from the exit of the brackish flood and tidal waters of the Kawainui Wetlands, via the Kawainui Canal.
