Get to Know the Course

Find where the course calendar is located. If it's in more than one place, try to create a single calendar so that you only have one place to look to see what you should be doing.

Things to pay attention to:

  • How important are specific deadlines as you go through the course?
    For some classes, deadlines are very important, for others what matters is that you finish the work, regardless of when. Make sure you know what this particular course expects.
  • Where can you go to get help?
    If there is no list of who to contact (like counselor or librarian or computer support), make sure to contact your instructor. In an online class, you won't get help until you ask for it.

What You Will Need

  • Access to computer with a fast internet connection.
  • An up-to-date internet browser installed on the computer. We suggest Firefox as the most compatible browser for Laulima.
  • An email account that you check daily. If you do not check your UH email, then you must forward your UH email to an email account that you do check (download a PDF describing how to do that).
  • Your course may have additional software requirements - check with the instructor to find out.

What You Should Worry About

  • Time - a typical online class takes more time than a face to face class. The amount varies, but plan for at least 10 hours a week, every week. Also, it is a lot harder to catch up in an online course.
  • Organization - online classes put a lot of the responsibility for the class on you. You need to know when your assignments are due, when you should start working on them, and where to go for help when you need it.
  • Files - make sure to save your files, back up your files, and organize your files so you can find them again if you need them. Online tools are generally reliable, but you need to be responsible for your coursework.

  • Download a computer file - such as a MS Word or PDF document) from your email
  • Attach a file on your computer to an email to send to someone
  • Submit a paper to Turnitin.com (if your instructor uses this system
  • Watch a YouTube video
  • Search effectively on the internet
  • Sign in to the Voyager Catalog to renew your books
  • Sign in to one of Windward CC's online journal databases, such as EBSCO
  • Contact the Library

Laulima-based Skills

  • Log in to Laulima
  • Set up your profile
  • Upload a File from your computer to the Laulima site
  • Post on a Blog or Discussion Board - click here for some suggestions on how to write a good posting
  • Respond to someone else's post
  • Download a Word document, change it, and upload it to your Drop Box
  • Upload a picture to a Discussion Board
  • Taking a test
  • Chatting with the Chat tool

Tips for Reading Online

  • With regular web pages, try increasing the font size on your screen (typically under the "View" menu)
  • With PDF documents, try using the magnification tool to make the document larger
  • Simplify your experience: turn off your email, close windows that you are not using
  • If you are using a Macintosh, try having the computer read the document to you (using the voice digitizing feature located under the "Sound" panel in the System Preferences)
