Debate Team, Spring 2013Our Winning Team from Spring 2013

From left to right is Evan Palmer, Michael Gifford, and Jack Groom. This is the winning team that competed against HPU on the topic of: This House believes that it is okay to sometimes morally lie.

For this tournament the students had about a month to prepare. It's an evidence-based debate so they must support their information with recent and credible sources. The tournament is laid out like the seed playoffs in football. The teams do not know whether they are for or against the topic so it is important to be able to argue both sides. The final round is not announced until 15 minutes prior.

Topics of discussion

Round 1: This house supports the use of standardized tests to measure K-12 student learning.

Round 2: This house would establish a penalty of a life sentence for intentionally killing an animal on the endangered species list.

Round 3: This house believes the U.S. is justified in intervening in the internal political processes of other countries to attempt to stop human rights abuses. (Whew! That's a long one!!!)

Semi-Final: This house would not allow private corporation or citizens to own or operate unmanned aerial drones within the U.S.

Final: TBA (This round is limited prep time of 15 minutes)
