On The Streets

As I lie in the dark

I hear the trees rustling,

Like a foamy wave, rolling onto the beach.

While it produces no sound

Sometimes I feel I can hear

The hums, sizzles, and pops of the streetlights.

It sounds like coals being shoved into a steam engine.

Critch goes the coal, picked up by the shovel.

Shing goes the shovel, throwing the coals into the engine.

Tssss goes the fire, as it welcomes the coal.

All of this accompanied

By the slight whistling of the vehicle against the wind.

Fhhhh

Fhhhh

As I get off the bench,

The creaking of the planks makes me

recall grandpa’s old wooden attic.

“Goodbye” say the broken door hinges.

“Goodbye” say the rotting floor nails.
