Defying Gravity
The cold chunk of pear rolls in my mouth and juice drips
slowly down my chin.
Tires roll smoothly under us as we pass a group of bikers.
I take one more bite, and slowly roll the window down.
The half-eaten pear now begins his journey outside the car.
With a flick of the wrist he is gone.
It catches a puff of air and is flying.
I sit there awestruck
at the beauty of this fruit which is floating
over the world,
so free,
so majestic.
Then its moment is gone,
and the crazy pear is trying to do a crash landing.
He speeds downward and lands with a splat
right on a biker’s helmet.
Who is surprised.
They are at a tilt for a long scary second
then right themselves.
I giggle and my mom asks me why.
“Nothing” I say,
“just nothing.”
