Conquering the Baby Gate

One baby gate can hold in one baby

but how about three?

It was a dark night

and our Labrador snored loudly.

The pink wood footboard of my crib in one hand,

the plastic baby gate in the other.

My black & white checkered kitty cat

staring at me through button eyes

telling me not to go.

Then, I did it, I let go of my crib,

and set my tiny foot on Soph’s gentle back,

and Kena put her foot on mine,

forming a triple pyramid.

With all her 1-year-old strength

she pushed the baby gate over

as we watched it fall

in triumph.

We were all partners in crime,

my sisters and I,

triplets together conquering the baby gate.
