Have You Ever Shaved Your Chest?

I watch silently, intently,

Absorbed by the weirdness revealing itself to me,

Like the firm, tanned brown chest that shows

After the thin black hairs wipe away.

Does it hurt? Does it sting?

Will the hair grow back quicker than usual?

The blue and white buzzer is small as a young child’s palm

But looks like a weed eater and barks like a rottweiler.

But the hair on his chest seems to slip away,

Like wiping warm butter off a plate.

His face is calm, peaceful, serene.

Is it soothing? Therapeutic?— I like try?

I take the blue and white baby buzzer,

Feel it vibrating in my hand

And slowly place it against my pale brown chest,

Over the rough pores on my body, between my breasts, at the center of me.

The blade tickles me and I smile, amused.

It trims my hair easily, while I carve the letter J—

The trimmed hair is still visible, just shorter than the rest.

I stare at the mirror at the J on my chest— Why did I do that?
