Harbor
ashen
skies painted the backdrop for the day we spent on the harbor
sleepy
waves crept up walls snuggled under algae,
and
we shared the same black button-up coat.
your
breath wrapped a gray atmosphere around us
as
the boats swayed their slow dance:
rock
to the right, rock to the left - and that felt right.
knuckles
laced, we teased the fish with our wheat bread—
see, i had made our sandwiches the way you like:
honey
ham, light on the mayo, heavy on the mustard, no crust.
but
you’ve always hated wheat bread.
so
we laughed at the edge of that creaky wooden dock,
and
tossed our sandwiches into the sea.
then
down to the seashore we walked barefoot,
to
the starting line where all things intertwine:
life,
greens, blues, and the caramel sand.
me,
you, and the warmth in our hands.
the
lighthouse across the way illuminated the sound,
and
every ripple in forever became clear.
there
on the beach under the ashen sky,
we
walked on into a time full of us.
