Star Poets

Hi everyone,

We want to thank all of you — students, teachers and parents — for your enthusiastic participation in the Star Poets contest and Poems for Peace this year. We received over 3,500 entries, which were judged anonymously so no students' names and schools appeared on the poems themselves.

It was a challenge to choose from among so many deserving pieces and heartening to see so much good writing being done across the state. The winners have already been notified, but we want to encourage all of you to keep writing and thinking creatively. (See 2009 Star Poets/ Poems for Peace winners list and press release on this home page)

A public reading and awards ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, May 31 at 1 p.m. in Paliku Theatre at Windward Community College in Kaneohe, Oahu. Admission is free. We are also in the process of posting the winning poems on our Star Poets web site at windward.hawaii.edu/poets to be enjoyed by all. Copies of the Star Poets Journal will be in selected Starbucks stores by mid-June.

As you may know, this is the last year of Starbucks' sponsorship of the project. We have appreciated their generous support over the past nine years and will be seeking new sponsors for next year. In fact, four of this year's private schools — Iolani, Punahou, Seabury Hall and Le Jardin Academy — have donated part or all of their school cash award back to the Star Poets project to make sure it continues.

We appreciate the many messages of encouragement to keep the project going. It helps to know that it's valued as a vehicle for students to express their thoughts and to recognize the power of words.

We?ll keep you informed on any new developments. Janine Oshiro, a published poet and WCC teacher who has her M.F.A. in English with an emphasis on poetry, will be taking over the project. You can reach her at wccstarpoets@gmail.com. Have a great summer!
