Picture of Frank MattosBefore English Professor Frank Mattos retired in June 2009, students used words like “respect” and “sensitive” when speaking of him.

Mattos’ distinguished career spanned 22 years and included teaching Composition and American & World Literature, and coordinating the Service Learning program at Windward Community College.

Mattos was key to establishing Service Learning at WCC, which has been a thriving program over the past 14 years. The academically based community service program now involves several hundred students at 36 service sites. From tutoring to teaching art at the Hawai‘i State Hospital, Windward students are in the community because of Mattos’ tireless effort.

The Windward Community College Chancellor’s Award recognizes a faculty or staff employee for outstanding demonstrated work performance, service, leadership and/or fostering of excellence in higher education.
