ICS 105B: Information Retrival Course-Operating System Skills (1 credit)

 

Catalog Description

This one-credit course is an introduction to operating skills literacy and is designed to help students master prerequisite skills for IRT intensive courses. The course will help students master the National Education Technology Standards (NETS) which are aligned with the University of Hawai‘i General Education Requirements. NETS standards are (1) Basic operations and concepts, (2) Social, ethical, and human issues, (3) Technology productivity tools, (4) Technology communications tools, (5) Technology research tools, and (6) Technology problem-solving and decision-making tools. Students completing ICS 105B will be able to:

  • Identify basic hardware components.
  • Boot the computer and use a GUI interface.
  • Use scroll bars.
  • Manipulate a window object.
  • Demonstrate basic file management skills.
  • Identify GUI (Graphics User Interface) objects.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the Operating Systems’ Accessories.
  • Install a simple program.
  • Perform simple computer maintenance.
  • Demonstrate understanding of principles of operating a computer.

Prerequisite: Keyboarding, completion of OAT 20B or BUSN 20B or equivalent, or instructor consent.


Student Learning Outcomes

  • Identify basic hardware components.
  • Boot the computer and identify basic hardware/software components.
  • Connect hardware components (printer, speakers, secondary storage devices, and an overhead projection system) to a computer.
  • Use the Operating System (OS) to complete specific functions such as file management, opening application programs, printing, and using some system utilities.
  • Utilize different user interfaces in the OS.
  • Install a simple program and draw a diagram of computer operating functions.
