Pandemic Influenza (How Antiviral Medications Work)

The recent spread of the avian influenza (H5N1) virus has drawn international attention. Although the timing, nature, and severity of the next influenza pandemic cannot be predicted, adequate planning to mitigate its impact is imperative. Extraordinary and sustained contributions from all sectors of society will help to safeguard our communities and promote Hawaii’s recovery.

Carl Chu works at the Department of Health, Disease Outbreak Control Division.  He obtained his B.S. Biochemistry (minor in Psychology) degree from UC Davis and his Pharm.D. from UCSF School of Pharmacy.

Robert S.H. Liu, Ph.D.

Can Dogs see Ghosts? (The Chemistry of Vision)

During his boyhood in Shanghai, China, R. Liu often heard the statement: "Dogs can see ghosts?" Now, after more than three decades of research in Vitamin A and visual pigments, he asked himself whether there is scientific basis that "dogs can see ghosts".

Robert S. H. Liu received his Ph.D. degree from California Institute of Technology. After four years as a research chemist at Dupont, he joined the Department of Chemistry at the University of Hawaii in 1968. He has been named an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow, and received the University of Hawaii’s Regents’ medals for excellence in research and in teaching.

What is the Community Forum in Chemistry?

• Its goal is to increase learning in chemistry for all students (and community members).

• A practicing professional discusses a chemistry related topic that is relevant to everyday lives.

• During the forum audience participate by asking questions, sharing views and comments.

• Serves as a bridge between classroom and real-world applications.
